Are YOU Afraid of Friday the 13th?
The fear of Friday the 13th is known as paraskevidekatriaphobia as well as friggatriskaidekaphobia. You may not take drastic safety precautions every Friday the 13th, but are you TOTALLY immune to the superstition? Given the choice, would you get married, start a new job, or close on a house on Friday the 13th? A recent study says most Americans wouldn't, even though they claim to not be afraid of the day.

Domestic Violence Arrest in Santa Barbara This Morning
A Santa Barbara man is arrested this morning on domestic violence charges.
Santa Barbara Police say shortly after midnight Monday, 19-year-old Federico Barreto followed his ex-girlfriend as she left Goleta heading toward downtown Santa Barbara on the 101. The 22 year old victim tried to lose Barreto by exiting the freeway and heading up Carrillo Hill to Miramonte. As she turned onto a small side street, Barreto blocked the narrow street with his Ford F150 truck. The victim backed away into a driveway as Barreto crashed into her Chevy Malibu wrecking the front end. He then took off. The victim was treated at Cottage Hospital for several visible injuries. Barreto called and threatened her to not cooperate with police or else he would harm her or her young child. At 6:45 this morning officers arrested Barreto without incident. He was booked at County Jail for several charges including domestic violence charges.
Meanwhile, To help prevent the cycle of domestic violence, the Santa Barbara Police Department works closely with the Domestic Violence Emergency Response Team (DVERT), staffed 24-hours with certified domestic violence peer counselors. Anyone experiencing or aware of domestic violence is encouraged to contact DVERT at 964-5245.

Growing my 'MO' (mustache) for Movember!
Hi,
This Movember I’ve decided to donate my face to raising awareness about cancers that affect men. My commitment is the growth of a moustache for the entire month of Movember, which I know will generate conversation, controversy and laughter.
I’m doing this because:
· 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in his lifetime
· 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime
I'm also doing this to bring awareness to men's health issues in general. My dad passed away 12 years ago, not from cancer, from a heart attack. But he had health issues that he kind of kept to himself. And if he'd been more up front about them, maybe things would have been different. I'm not saying the out come would have been any different, I'm not saying "what if" I just wish we would have been a little bit more prepared is all...

Local Schools Put on Lock Down! Sign of the Times...(sigh)
Three schools in Carpinteria were put on lockdown mode earlier this morning after a robbery incident that took place at a convenient store on the 500 block of Linden Ave. Aliso, Canalino, and Carpinteria Middle School were all put on lockdown mode for about two and a half hours today while the Sheriff’s Department conducted a search for the suspect.
Witnesses say the man entered the store around 8AM and threatened a clerk with a knife. He then stabbed the clerk in the chest before taking off. No word yet on the condition of the clerk. Meanwhile Sheriff’s deputies, along with a helicopter and K-9 unit searched the surrounding area for the suspect. A few hours later the suspect was taken into custody and the lockdown at the schools was lifted.
By the way... my sister Julia was at Aliso School during the lock down with the kids. She works part of her day at Aliso and part of her day at Canalino. So either way, she would have been on lock down at one school or the other. And when they're on lock down it is literally, physically on LOCK DOWN. They could not go ANYWHERE. The entire time! They had to use trash cans to pee in... good times good times... Luckily I was able to keep in touch with her through text. So that was comforting. And of course the kids had no idea what was going on. But I can't imagine how much of the school's day is just turned upside down because of this. THREE schools, pretty much most of the school district was on lock down for about three hours. That's a lot of adults and kids that are affected by this because some stupid idiot tries to rob a store. It's just really upsetting on so many levels...
I hope the clerk is ok. Their condition is still not known at the time of this posting. I'm trying to find out more on the suspect. All I know is he's described as black and either a teen or young man in his twenties.
And this is the second incident in CARP! in just a few days! WAY too close to home!

It’s Election Day Tuesday. Polls open at 7am and close at 8pm. Over 50-percent of voters are expected to vote by mail – previously referred to as absentee ballots. If you’re holding onto a vote by mail ballot, it needs to be retuned today to the Election's Office or any polling place/vote center in the County, to be received no later than 8:00 P.M. Jury selection is still underway in the double-homicide trial of Cory Lyons. Lyons is accused of killing his own brother, Daniel Lyons and his brothers long time partner, Barbara Sharton in May of last year. The pair was in an alleged dispute with Lyons over a home on the Mesa. Jury selection began October 21st with a panel of 83 jurors. 250 potential jurors have been sent notices. Lawyers will eventually seat 12 jurors and 4 alternates.
A 4,000 lb. ceiling in the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB has collapsed. The incident happened over the weekend. Inspection crews went floor to floor on Monday trying to determine the cause of the collapse and if there was a possibility it could happen again. Officials blamed the collapse on nails that are intended to hold a suspended structure in place, but instead gave way sending a 20 by 25 foot ceiling to the ground. The failed nail system is not believed to be found in other parts of the building. No one was injured. Bren Hall originally opened in 2002.
Ruben Mize, a Santa Barbara gang member who will be retried next year for the death of 16 yr. old Lorenzo Carachure, is standing trial in connection for a separate attack. Two months after Carachure was killed, Mize and co-defendant Jacob Medina allegedly left a victim with 30 stab wounds. While Mize is in custody and Medina is not, both are due back in court on November 8th for more pretrial matters.
Ventura County Sheriff's Deputies are looking for suspects in a shooting that happened last night (Monday) in Nyeland Acres. They say around 8:45 PM they received a call of shots fired and a scream in the 2600 block of Eucalyptus in Nyeland Acres. When deputies arrived they found some evidence of a shooing, but no victim. Around 11 PM, Oxnard Police informed the Sheriff's Department that their male victim had turned up at Saint John's Medical Center suffering from a non life threatening gunshot wound.
Deputies continue to investigate the incident and are asking anyone who may have information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Halloween festivities in Isla Vista brought in a huge crowd over the weekend, and because Halloween fell on a Sunday, it turned into a 3 day event. The Sheriff’s Department reports making over 250 arrests. They issued almost 500 citations to partygoers. Nearly 40 people were taken to the emergency room for various medical conditions. Officials estimated that 37,000 people filled the streets throughout the entire weekend. Just a few years ago, the crowd was estimated at 40,000.
